Yes content, SEO and backlinks are all vitally important. Underlying it all is having identified the keywords a site is targeting.

The order these things should be done…
1. Keyword research…identifying high traffic, low competition terms.
2. A simple, well optimized Wordpress blog.
3. Creating great content…articles, video, podcasts…around those keywords
4. Building backlinks

When you have the right keywords, the rest just flows and it’s really quite easy getting to page 1 in Google.

The real problem I see is people getting hung up on beautiful design and functionality rather than focusing on keywords, content and backlinks.

What a great point Susan. I don’t use business cards much anymore at all. Blogs are super easy to put up and they don’t need to look really pretty. My site isn’t super nice looking but what it does have is great content. That is the name of the game — providing content that is valuable for your target audience.

Knowing some SEO to have it optimized for the search engines will help your site be found, as well as creating backlinks from other high quality sites (through article marketing, video marketing, social media sites, etc.)

You can always start with a “clunker” site and fix it up as you go along, or hire a professional like you to help you get things going. The point is to get it going!
